V.V. Mineral the country’s leading heavy mineral mining company began its journey in the year 1989, in which it was established. Some of the most influential people in laying down the foundations of the company include Mr. Vaikundarajan and Mr. V. Subramanian.

There are five wet plants situated close to the mining areas for up-grading the mined ore in mining area itself. There are six dry plants situated close to the mining areas and equipped with state-of-the-art machinery. The plants are equipped with machines from ERIEZ - USA, Linatex, Corona Stat from Australia, Rotex screens from USA and MINOX Grading Machinery imported from Germany.

Most of V.V. Mineral’s Australian equipments are from Downer EDI Mining, Australia (Previously Roche Mining). And, most of the processing machinery is imported, and wherever necessary, indigenous designs have been adopted by the team of Engineers and R&D.

The total capacity of the machinery is about 14,000 metric tons of Garnet and 20,000 metric tons of ilmenite, 1000 metric tons of Zircon, 500 Metric Tons of Rutile per month. An autonomous quality control department is responsible for implementation of rigorous quality control checks in order to maintain our zero-rejection track record.

VV Minerals India deals with Garnet mining, Rutile Mining, Ilmenite mining and Zircon Mining.

Welding Electrodes Using Rutile And Ilmenite

Rutile and Ilmenite
Rutile and ilmenite are heavy minerals mostly found in form of placer mineral deposits on the surface of sea shores and river banks. They are extracted using heavy mineral mining and are separated through various separation processes like gravity separation and magnetic separation. They are mainly used for industrial applications such as in the making of Titanium metal, as colouring agents, ceramic and glass products. Ilmenite is mainly used for making white walled tyres, glazed papers, plastic, printed fabrics, flooring materials like linoleum, pharmaceuticals, soaps face powders and other cosmetic products. And Rutile is mainly used for car paints, sunscreens, plastics, paper and textiles, as well as a growing number of foodstuffs and cosmetics.

Enriched concentrate of ilmenite is used for production of welding electrodes of rutile. The principal industrial application of rutile is in the manufacture of titanium dioxide or synthetic rutile and welding rod coating.

However, ilmenite coatings are considered to be inferior to rutile coatings on welding electrodes. Although ilmenite is considerably cheaper than Rutile, Rutile electrodes are preferred over ilmenite welding electrodes.

VV Mineral is one of India, major manufacturer and exporter of Ilmenite and Rutile. VV Minerals, India is also the first private ilmenite exporter of the country. The annual output of 2,25,000 metric tons of Ilmenite is unmatched till date. It is family grown business started by Mr. S Vaikundarajan, Chairman of VV Group of companies.

The Difference Between Underground Mining And Surface Mining

The process of removal of essential mineral ores or geological substances from soil or sand is called mining. These minerals are of great value and are abundantly available in rocks and earth’s surface. Minerals can be metallic or non metallic and can be used for a several of purposes.

Mining is conducted basically in two ways, either underground, or surface mining. Surface mines, or strip mines, are large pits where dirt and rock are removed to expose the minerals. Underground mines are large tunnels that are dug deep into the ground to reach minerals that are too far underground to be reached from surface mines.

Surface mining can be done on mountain tops or on surface of the beaches. The surface of the beach is rich with heavy minerals. Heavy mineral mining is carried out extensively in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. One of the leading companies that undertake heavy mineral mining is VV Mineral. VV Minerals India manufactures mainly four minerals i.e. Rutile, ilmenite, Zircon and Garnet.

Underground mining is done mainly for minerals that are embedded deep in the soil, for example coal. Coal mining is a very economically beneficial activity and contributes greatly to the economy of our country.

What is Sustainable Mining

Sustainability in resource use and allocation is vital to the economic and social welfare future of the global community. Management of environmental resources such as land, fossil fuels, water and air will become increasingly important – forcing nations to do more with less.

Sustainable mining practices should be decided keeping in mind that present generations’ needs should not be adversely affecting the future. They also should maintain equilibrium in the eco-system. Rate of depletion of non renewable resources should be judicious. There should be minimum adverse effects to the environment.

Before mining the most important exercise, to be carried out very faithfully is prospecting and exploration. Prospecting is pre mining stage operation mainly confines to sufficient evidence of mineral occurrence in respect of shape, size, quantity, quality and economics.

Exploration is a dynamic process and continues during subsistence of mining period. It is expected it should lead ahead of mining operation for consistent updating the mineral reserve.

V.V. Mineral, a heavy mineral mining company based in Tamil Nadu is one the leading companies that conduct the mining activities in a sustainable effort and indulge in activities that are held for  the conservation of natural resources and energy. For example, VV Mineral uses sea water concentration plants to save fresh water as well as use wind as a renewable energy to generate power through wind turbines.

V.V Mineral is a family grown business started by Mr. S Vaikundarajan, Founder, Chairman & Managing Director, VV Group.

How Heavy Mineral Mining began in India

India has a coastline of more than 6000 kilometers and is abundantly rich in various minerals. In 1909, a German chemist, Schomberg discovered heavy mineral deposits in Manavalakurichi in the then state of Travancore which is presently known as Tamil Nadu. These deposits proved to be economically more beneficial compared to other minerals. In the beginning the mining was carried out just for the mineral, Monazite.

During the First World War the British realized that this was a good trade resource and seized the operations of the German chemist and deported him.  By then they recognized other minerals in the sands which were of economic benefit.  In the early 1920s minerals were transported across borders and by the 1940’s India began contributing to about 80% of world production of these minerals.

Hence, it can be state that India was leading the heavy mineral markets long before US, Canada, Australia and Africa.  However, today India faces a lot of challenges in the heavy mineral market share.

Heavy mineral mining is done in various parts of India, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The kinds of minerals found on the Indian shores include, zircon, rutile, ilmenite, garnet and other titanium dioxide products. Zircon is used in ceramics and is the most abundantly found mineral. Garnet is used in water jet cutting and sand blasting. Rutile and ilmenite is mostly used in the production of titanium.

One of the most renowned mining companies of India includes V.V. Mineral, which is based in Tamil Nadu. V.V. Mineral engages in mining activity of minerals such as Zircon, Garnet, Ilmenite and Rutile. They are Indias largest mining manufacturer and exporters of Garnet.

Heavy Mineral Mining Around the World

Heavy minerals are found on the surface of the earth in many parts of the world. Particularly in countries like U.S., South Africa, Australia, India, Sri Lanka and Canada. They are called heavy minerals because their specific gravity is higher than other elements found on the surface of earth.

They are economically very beneficial as they are useful in many industrial applications. Because of their higher specific gravity, they tend to mount up at coastal belts of rivers and beaches in the form of placer deposits. Major minerals that come in the heavy minerals category include Zircon, Garnet, Rutile, Ilmenite, Leuocoxene, and Titanium. The wave actions deposits the minerals on the surface of sand, and these can be extracted through the process of mining.

Once the mining process is complete the minerals can be isolated from the sand using various separation processes like dry gravity separation or magnetic separation and others. The current heavy mineral industry around the world has shown prosperity in places like Murray Basin, Golden Grove and Kangaroo Island in South Australia. India is also well known in the heavy mineral mining industry.

One of the premier companies that indulge in heavy mineral mining is V.V. Mineral. They are India’s biggest mining, manufacturers and exporters of Garnet. They have been awarded as the ‘Number One Garnet Exporters’ of our country. They also undertake Zircon mining, Rutile mining and Ilmenite mining.

India has abundant reserves in places such as Gulf of Mannar, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin and Kerala. In South Africa, places with great deposits of heavy minerals include, Imperri Hills, Madagascar. Quebec in Canada is also has plentiful of these mineral deposits.

Difference Between Minerals and Ores

Inside the Earth’s core, due to heat, pressure and other chemical reactions different elements like gems and metals tend to crystallize. Over thousands of years of cooling, these elements are mixed together and form larger crystals which can be extracted through the process of mining and used for various purposes such as jewellery and other industrial uses.

A Mineral is the original form in which gems and metal and other impurities exists, whereas ores can be defined as a mineral from which the metal can be extracted for economic benefit. All ores are minerals but all minerals are not necessarily ores.

Minerals are found in the natural environment, for example on the surface of beach sands or underground.  And ores contain minerals in form of rocks. Ores are more of economic benefits, but minerals are more of scientific benefits. An ore is a mineral that has metal in large quantity; the quantity should be enough to be worth mining. It is a rock that contains minerals.

Often, two or more metals can be extracted from the same ore. They are mixed with other valueless gangue as well. Ores are crystalline solids that form rocks.
